What is Unexplained Infertility
Unexplained Infertility occurs when fertility specialists found no cause for a couple’s inability to conceive. For 20 to 30 percent of couples fertility testing results in unexplained infertility.
A couple is given the diagnosis of unexplained infertility when they suffer from infertility and the diagnostic workup fails to identify the cause of infertility. Even with the availability of various fertility diagnostics, Unexplained infertility is very common.
Unexplained infertility does not have to mean that giving up your dream of having children, because it can be treated and increase the likelihood of conception, says fertility expert Dr. Arpitha Reddy.
What are the reasons for Unexplained Infertility?
The most common reason for unexplained infertility is age. Women over age 35 have a greater incidence of this diagnosis. In women over the age of 40 who are still ovulating regularly, unexplained infertility may be due to egg quality issues that are not easily identified.
Because of the number of biochemical processes that must happen perfectly in order to get a pregnancy, unexplained infertility is likely caused by various factors. Standard fertility testing focuses on obvious issues like ovulation irregularities and unusual sperm counts.
How is Unexplained Infertility diagnosed?
A woman is diagnosed with unexplained infertility when she is not able to get pregnant and the result for all standard fertility tests for both the partners are normal. In such cases, the following exists:
- The physical examination shows no signs of abnormalities of the uterus, ovaries or fallopian tubes.
- The hysterosalpingogram (HSG) shows a normal fallopian tube and uterine cavity.
- All ovarian tests show normal levels of egg supply.
- The man’s sperm analysis shows enough quantities of healthy sperm.
- The woman’s ovulation activity is perfect and normal, or any ovulation disorders like Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) and Endometriosis have been successfully treated.
- Blood results of both male and female partners show normal.
Best fertility doctors will opt for all the standard fertility tests before providing the diagnosis of unexplained infertility.
Can Unexplained Infertility be treated?
Yes! Fertility specialists may provide treatment options for unexplained infertility based on the results of previous tests. In some cases, a couple with unexplained infertility may conceive after testing and for others, fertility experts may try a variety of treatments.
Some of the treatments for unexplained infertility as explained by fertility specialists are listed below:
Improving the timing of intercourse
The timing of intercourse is crucial when trying to conceive, particularly for couples diagnosed with unexplained infertility. One of the best fertility experts Dr. Arpitha Reddy counsel couples on how to calculate the woman’s ovulation and timely intercourse as well.
Managing overweight to prevent obesity, being obese or being underweight are the potential factors in male and female infertility. The best fertility doctors recommend at least 30 minutes of physical exercise each day to maintain a healthy weight and reduce stress.
Fertility specialists often use several medications to treat unexplained infertility, as medicines can induce a woman’s ovaries to produce more than one normal egg per menstrual cycle that help increases the chances of pregnancy.
Most of the fertility specialists place a pre-washed sperm from the male partner directly into the uterus. This process is done using a catheter that goes through the cervix into the uterus.
In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
IVF involves creating embryos in the lab outside the woman’s body using her retrieved eggs and man’s sperm, then transferring the embryo to the woman’s uterus. IVF has a high success rate for women with unexplained infertility.
