What is Surgical Sperm Retrieval?

Surgical sperm extraction or retrieval refers to the process of obtaining a small amount of healthy sperm directly from the testis, which will later be used in IVF or ICSI. This extraction of sperm is widespread in treating cases of male infertility. There are multiple techniques for extracting sperm namely MESA, PESA, TESA & TESE.

This procedure involves placing a needle attached to a syringe through the skin of the scrotum and simply sucking out the fluid inside the testicle. Learn more about the TESA procedure of Mums.

Who needs Sperm Retrieval?

MESA, TESA, PESA & TESE techniques of sperm retrieval are used in cases of male infertility.
  • The absence of Vas Deferens (the tubes which carry the semen)
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Block in the tract of the vas deferens (mostly because of vasectomy)

Techniques for Sperm Retrieval:

  • MESA (Microsurgical Epididymal Sperm Aspiration)
  • PESA (Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration)
  • TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration)
  • TESE (Testicular Sperm Extraction)

MESA (Microsurgical Epididymal Sperm Aspiration)

An open surgical sperm retrieval procedure that uses an operating microscope to locate the tubules of the epididymis precisely, so that large numbers of sperm can be extracted. Learn more about the MESA procedure of Mums.

PESA (Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration)

This procedure involves placing a needle attached to a syringe directly into the epididymis and sucking out the fluid. Learn more about the PESA procedure of Mums.

TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration)

This procedure involves placing a needle attached to a syringe through the skin of the scrotum and simply sucking out the fluid inside the testicle. Learn more about the TESA procedure of Mums.

TESE (Testicular Sperm Extraction)

This procedure involves opening up the scrotum and taking a large volume of testicular tissue, perhaps from several regions of the testicle. Sperm is then retrieved using a microscope to identify individual spermatozoa suitable for fertilization. Learn more about the TESE procedure of Mums.
