ICSI – Specialised IVF for Best Results
What is ICSI?
Introduced in the early 1990s, ICSI stands for Intra-Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection, a more sophisticated form of IVF (In-vitro Fertilization) in which a single, good-quality sperm is injected into a mature egg. The embryo is then placed into a woman’s uterus to assist fertilization, thus eliminating the need for natural interaction of sperm with the egg. Thus, this technique is an excellent treatment for cases with severe male infertility.
Who needs ICSI?
As discussed above, ICSI-IVF is a great technique when dealing with Male infertility problems. It is suitable in cases of:
- Severely low sperm count (usually less than 5 million sperm/ml)
- Low sperm motility (usually less than 20 percent even with normal sperm counts)
- Normal percent motility but with a poor motility grade (grade is how well the sperm swim)
- Severely abnormal morphology (sperm shape)
- Failed or poor fertilization in a previous IVF attempt
ICSI Success Rates:
Usually, the success rate of egg fertilization using ICSI is about 70-85%. This is higher than the fertilization rate of conventional IVF.
However, this success rate is not the same as the rate of pregnancy through ICSI. The success of pregnancy after the procedure will depend upon the quality of the resulting embryo, successful transfer of the embryo into the uterus, and successful implantation (the process of the embryo attaching to the wall of the uterus).
Understanding your embryo quality up front can help you determine how best to approach treatment.
