What is IVF?
IVF stands for In-vitro Fertilization is the most widespread technique in artificial fertilization. In this procedure, the egg & the sperm are mixed in laboratory conditions. The embryo is then transferred to the uterus. This procedure outlines the most obvious yet time-consuming procedure of artificial fertility techniques. We at Mums have the best fetility experts to treat all cases of male & female infertility.
Who needs IVF?
In-vitro fertilization is an easy way to treat some common infertility issues. It is suitable in cases of:
- Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
- Ovarian disorders, premature ovarian failure etc.
- Uterine problems
- Unexplained infertility
How is IVF done?
- Fertility Testing:Various tests are carried out to check the requirement of an IVF procedure for the couple desiring a pregnancy. A transvaginal ultrasound is used to check the uterus and ovary. Hormone levels are checked using blood samples.
- Ovary Stimulation:
Once IVF is deemed necessary, fertility medications are given to stimulate egg development in the patient. Multiple eggs are desired for a successful IVF result.
- Egg Retrieval:
Eggs are retrieved after ovary stimulation with the guidance of an ultrasound. With the help of ultrasound imaging, a hollow needle is sent through the pelvic cavity to remove the eggs. This is done by expert fertility doctors at Mums with the help of advanced equipment.
The sperm and eggs are mixed together to encourage fertilization, under the supervision of an embryologist in Mums advanced fertility lab. The process is monitored to check that eggs are properly getting fertilized. In some cases, ICSI is used alternatively in which sperm is directly introduced in a close proximity of the fertilization site.
- Embryo Transfer:
After 3-5 days post-fertilization, healthy developing embryos are transferred into the female’s uterus. After a successful transfer of embryos, implantation usually takes place around 8-10 days. In some cases of unexplained infertility or other reasons of female infertility, blastocyst culture is used to achieve greater IVF success rate.
Factors determining IVF success rate:
How many embryos should be transferred?
Ideally, 2 good quality embryos are needed for greater IVF success rate. This helps in preventing multiple pregnancies yet give enough chance for good success rate of a test tube baby.
However, the effectiveness of the procedure can only be diagnosed and reported by a qualified fertility specialist. So, be sure to talk to our expert fertility specialists who will guide you throughout the process to conceive happiness.
